Spring Excursion to Kildrought House and Castletown House, Celbridge, Co. Kildare: Saturday 8 April 2017
We are now taking bookings for our Spring Excursion, which will visit Kildrought House and Castletown House in Celbridge, Co. Kildare.
The coach will depart from Society House at 9.30am and go directly to Kildrought House in Celbridge, where the owner June Stuart will give a tour of this privately-owned, unique house, followed by tea/coffee and home-baked cakes. We will then depart for a short, guided walk of Celbridge Abbey, associated with Jonathan Swift and Henry Grattan. Before embarking on a guided tour of Castletown House, we will stop by the Castletown restaurant for lunch. Our coach will depart from Castletown House and return to Merrion Square by approx. 6pm.
The cost of the excursion is €50 for members and €55 for guests to include cost of coach, coffee and home-made cake at Kildrought House, tours and lunch at Castletown House.

Explorers’ Excursion to Donegal with Dr Brian Lacey: 7–9 July 2017
This year we are pleased to invite Members who are interested in an active and outdoor excursion to take part in a three-day, two-night trip to Donegal. The expedition will include a visit to White Island and a walking tour around the archaeological sites of Glencolmcille in County Donegal. This excursion is for independently-minded members as the group will meet in Killadeas, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh on Day 1, so own transport is required throughout.
The current schedule for the three-day (two-night) excursion is as follows:
Day 1: We will meet at Manor House Country Hotel, Killadeas, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh at 1pm. If you get a chance, you can visit the Killadeas Church site before our meeting. We will have lunch nearby before being taken on a ferry for a tour of White Island. The group will then travel on to Donegal Town, Co. Donegal where we will check into our hotel for the evening.
Day 2: The group will be taken on a day-long walking tour of sites of archaeological interest around Glencolmcille guided by Dr Brian Lacey. Packed lunch will be provided. That evening, the group will convene for dinner in the hotel.
Day 3: The group will leave the hotel and meet at in the car park of Donegal Castle at 12 noon for a guided tour, before embarking on a return journey to Dublin at our leisure.
As always, excursion programmes are subject to change due to weather and other circumstances. As this excursion will primarily take place outdoors please ensure that you have appropriate waterproof clothing and that you are prepared for walking on rough terrain. The cost of the excursion is €275 for members (€300 for guests) which covers: 2 nights’ bed and breakfast at The Central Hotel, Donegal Town, 1 dinner, 2 lunches, all entrance fees, ferry to White Island, gifts for speakers and guides and other administration costs.
Autumn Excursion to Monaghan County Museum and Bellamont House, Cootehill, Co. Monaghan: Saturday 16 September 2017
We are now taking bookings for our Autumn Excursion to Monaghan County Museum and the privately-owned Bellamont House in Cootehill.
The coach will depart from Society House at 9.00am. Upon arrival in Monaghan town, we will have a short coffee break. We will then visit the Monaghan County Museum to view its extensive collection, covering the history of the county from the end of the last Ice Age over 10,000 years ago all the way to modern day. Following lunch in Clones, we will have a rare opportunity to visit the privately-owned Bellamont House – often described as the greatest Palladian villa ever built in Ireland.
The cost the of excursion is €45 for members and €50 for guests to include cost of coach, tours and lunch.
