Sheppard Trust

Sheppard Trust Competition 2006/2007

History of the Competition

In 1973 representatives of Dr Jack Sheppard and his sister Dr Molly Sheppard, lifelong members of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, established Trusts from which prizes would be awarded to promote interest in and love for our heritage amongst young people. The Trusts are administered by the Council of the Society through its Sheppard Trusts Committee.

Since 1973 many competitions have been organised, focussed on each of the four provinces in turn and prizes amounting to many hundreds of euros have been awarded.

This year: Leinster

This year the competition is open to young people in 5th or 6th class in primary school and transition year students at second level in the Province of Leinster. Entries will be accepted from individuals or from groups, large or small.

The theme of the competition is Our People, Our Place in the Past, and entries are to be presented in the form of a project on some aspect of the archaeology, history or traditions of Leinster or a local area in Leinster.

Entries which have won prizes in the past have ranged over topics such as studies of a local archaeological site or a group of monuments, studies of placenames, a study of street furniture, a study of a town or city, or an historic area within a town or city.

The most recent winners of the group prizes were Coolbock National School, Riverstown, Co. Sligo, Northampton National School, Kinvara, Co Galway and Scoil Naomh Treasa, Ballintogher, Co Sligo. Individual winners came from schools in Roscommon and Sligo.

Entrants are advised that in judging the competition the judges are in particular seeking entries that show initiative and original research. Projects may be on paper or CD format and may be illustrated with maps, plans, drawings and photographs. Entrants are asked not to submit models because of the difficulty of handling and storage. Entries may be in Irish or English.
The prize fund for the competition will exceed 2,000 euro. The entries will be judged by a panel of experts, appointed by the Sheppard Trusts Committee, whose decision will be final in this matter. Prizes will be awarded only where entries achieve a standard that is considered adequate by the committee.
Entries, accompanied by completed application forms, must be submitted by 17 March 2007. All entrants will be notified of the results of the competition by the end of April 2007.
